10 Things You Never Hear Dancers Say

New here?  Follow us on Bloglovin'!

1. Wow! I'm really excited to sew new pointe shoes this weekend.

2. It's not awkward to go back to wearing a leotard and tights after break at all.

3. Gosh I hope the rehearsal director makes us wear our pointe shoes the entire 4 hour rehearsal.

4. Stage make-up looks great on me and I think I might start wearing it normally.

5. I've never lost a single bobby pin.

6. Hairspray? Oh, I don't bother with it.

7. I hope we only do fouettes on the left today.

8. Nah, I really don't care what kind of costume I get.

9. Yeah, I had like 3 almonds for dinner.

10. Mark it? I'd rather do it full out.

Happy World Ballet Day!

New here?  Follow us on Bloglovin'!

It's strange how something I started at 3 because my mom put me in it has become such a huge part of my life now.  I now have 13 hours of class a week, which will probably turn into at least 20 when BTI starts.

I'm honestly so grateful for dance.  Even though most of the time it causes me extreme pain, it truly makes me so happy.  Maybe it's just the endorphins, but I can be having a horrible day and as soon as I get to dance everything is better.

I'd like to think it's worth what it's doing to my body.

2014 Recital Songs

New here?  Follow us on Bloglovin'!

For this week's backthatazzup, instead of linking up one song, I decided to link-up a playlist.  Recital season has started and teacher have begun telling us what our songs are.  We're not supposed to start our dances for two weeks, but we already have in some classes.  I'm definitely most excited for jazz so far, for which we are using Elysium (which was an incredible pain in the ass to find).

In case this is your first week, here's what it's all about.  Generally Mondays are considered pretty sucky right?  Well, let's change that.  Instead of focusing on what sucks about Monday, we'll talk about what made us smile throughout the rest of the week, to start the week on a positive note!

The Rules!  (These are really just kind suggestions)

1. Follow your hosts: Cassandra and Raewyn!

2. Link up your post that includes 5-ish things that made you smile in the past week

3. Comment after you link up

4. Go visit some other blogs and make some friends!

5. Have fun, and don't forget to smile!!

My 5 Little Grins from this week include. . .

1.  On Monday we continued working on our recital dance for hip-hop.

2.  Tuesday, I found out that tomorrow the BOB kids have a practice battle at another elementary school and that I get to go and help.

3.  On Thursday we continued or dance for recital in jazz too.  It's so great and I think it is going to be really awesome.

4. We had my family friends over on Friday, then they came to see Alice's Adventures in Wonderland on Saturday, and then went out to dinner with us after.

5.  The entire weekend was so great.  It was so much fun and both performances went really, really well.  I can't wait to see all the pictures and video of the performance.

The Sunday Currently

Whew!  This weekend sure has been a whirlwind.  Actually, the entire past week has.

Since Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was a brand new production for the company, there was a lot to do.  Our company director isn't local and she hadn't been able to make it to dress rehearsal.  So, on Saturday morning, we had to get lighting set, figure out all the props & sets, set the entire production- give everyone spots on stage, run the entire performance in costume, and get notes.

Our company also does an event for girls scouts.  So, after the show on Saturday, some girls helped with Brownie troops and other were signing autographs in costume for an hour+.  I was in pointe shoes from about 11am to 6pm.  My feet were killing me, but they were a lot better when I woke up this early.

*I'm also extremely upset about the timing of this all.  Both last year and this year, day light savings time was on the weekend of a performance, and the two years before that, it was the weekend of dance competition/ convention.  It is extremely inconvenient, but I guess it will be nice driving to dance in daylight still. . .*

Today was great, but extremely emotional.  There are 3 seniors in the company and even though it's only my second year here, it was still upsetting that this was their last company performance.

Soooo. . . . onto right now.  I'm currently. . .

Reading- Night by Ellie Wiesel.  It's for school, but I got to choose from a few different books.

Writing- a research paper on psychoneuroimmunology. Definitely not as fun as a blog post, but I think it is an interesting topic.

Listening- to tonight's episode of The Mentalist.  I'm not really a huge fan, but my parent enjoy it and I find the couch much more comfortable than my desk chair.

Thinking- about how lucky I am to do online school.  I can get up whenever I please tomorrow.

Smelling- hairspray.  LOTS of hairspray.

Wishing- this hadn't been the last weekend of company.  We do have a party in April, but that seems so far away!

Needing- to sleep.  Like a lot.  Unsurprisingly, I had an incredibly hard time falling asleep last night, and not only was it a late night, this was an early morning as well.

Thank you so much to Raewyn over at Be a Warrior Queen for writing such a great guest post for me yesterday.

Dance Like No One's Watching [Raewyn's Guest Blog]

New here?  Follow us on Bloglovin'!
Hi there! My name is Raewyn and I blog over at Be a Warrior Queen!

I'm one of those people that can be loud and in your face, but in the most loveable way ever. I try my best to always be happy and find the positive. My blog is one part being positive and another part starting a movement. I want to start a magazine to empower young women and girls to be themselves unashamedly. I have a pick up truck named Chuck the Truck; my favorite clothes are 1950s inspired and I drink tea like it's going out of business. I'm engaged to my best friend of ten years and we're getting married in a few weeks! Love is my religion - the end all and be all. I focus on sharing as much love as I can, because without love we are nothing. I would love if you'd stop by my blog and we could become the best of friends!

While Cassandra is dancing away this weekend [If you're in Chicago, seriously go check her out! I'm jealous], I thought I wound entertain you with my own dancing mishaps.

Let me start out with saying, I love to go to dance class. I love to move around and dance and do routines and learn fun things.

Except, I'm a really awkward dancer.

I do great when I have a routine to do, but if you put me in a club or at a dance or, even my upcoming wedding, I'm going to look ridiculous.

I like to boogey with my hands a lot. Wave them around and stuff. Not normal.

In high school, I only went to Homecoming and Winter Formal because I was so self-conscious about my dancing skills. Yet, I did three years of performances for Air Guitar - our annual lip sync started by my journalism class. We were always the opening act, and somehow I was always in every dance segment of ours.

This made for some wicked costume changes. Air Guitar taught me not to be self-conscious about my dancing. The audience (and the crowd of people at a club or wherever) is not going to notice that I'm "doing it wrong" unless I come out and say "no, no that was wrong!"

So, dance like no one's watching...because you always feel great afterward.

The Sunday Currently (Feb 2nd)

Good evening!  I've had a hell of a weekend.  Yesterday, we had out first run through ever for Alice in Wonderland.  Well, we were supposed to.  Although I was at the studio from 2 to 7:30 we weren't able to get through the entire production.  We had a lot of pieces to finish and put together.

Today, we were able to get through the whole thing right away which was nice.  We didn't have as long of a rehearsal today- it was only from 10 to 1, but then I had and audition at 2.  I'm definitely very sore right now and very exhausted as well.

I'm currently. . .

Reading nothing.  I haven't been to the library since BOB was canceled.  (I usually go on my way back home).

Writing blog posts!  Friday, I sat down and planned out every single day of this month and filled it with posts.  I'm pretty excited for some of them.

Thinking how hard tomorrow's ballet class will be.  Everything hurts.

Wishing I could have a shamrock shake.  I understand that if they were available year round, they wouldn't seem as special, but starting in February and not ending until April would be hella nice.

Hoping I actually get some sleep tonight.  I have a lot of live classes to go to tomorrow which kind of sucks

Wearing dance shorts and a long sleeve shirt- bumming it.

Wanting a doughnut.  (and a shamrock shake)  I'm lucky I dance so often & don't always eat what I want because I would be huge omg

5 Tips on Auditioning

New here?  Follow us on Bloglovin'!
This weekend I'm auditioning for the ABT Summer Intensive.  I'm really just going for audition experience.  Here are my top 5 tips for going to and audition!

1. They want you to succeed.
-They're not having auditions so they can critique dancers.
-The end goal is to have people they want to accept into their program or company.

2. Stand in front.
-How are they going to see you if you're in the back?
-It may seem like a good idea to stand in the back if you don't know the combination, but then they won't be able to see you at all and probably won't consider you.

3. Be confident.
-Stand with your head tall, shoulders back, and hands at your side.  If you are looking down and have your arms crossed you are closing yourself off.  That's not what you want to do!
-If you don't think you can do it, why should they?

4. Look put together.
-Don't come with your hair crazy. Use a hair net and lots of hairspray. You don't want your bun coming out in the middle of grandé allegro.
-If it says you can wear any leotard as long as it is a solid color, you can take that one of two ways. You could wear black, navy, or blue and look professional, but possibly blend in. The other option is to wear a color like hot pink and get noticed. Either is fine, but if you're wearing hot pink, you have to be prepared to be watched.

5. Eat well.

-Auditions are generally tough and sometimes physically demanding. Going to McDonalds for breakfast probably is not the greatest idea.
-Eating oatmeal, toast, or eggs and fruit for breakfast will help keep you full through the day.
-You should also bring water to the audition as you may get a water break. A granola bar or other simple snack for after would be a good idea as well.

Craft Help?

I have lots of pairs of tights from dancing so often.  After a while, though, they get runs and I really can't use them any more.  I feel bad throwing them out.  Do you have any ideas of stuff I can make from them, or do you know some one who can use them to make stuff?  Comment below, please! :)

Prepping for Pointe

On Wednesday, I went down to Chicago to get fitted for a new pair of pointe shoes.  (More on the Chicago adventure later).  Previously, I had gone to someone who fits shoes on her own.  She has her own method and lots of special things she has you do to help protect your feet.  Some of them are super helpful, but some are a little crazy.  She only puts people in two brands of shoes as well and that is rather annoying.  Neither really work for me so I thought it would be best to go somewhere else with more variety.  I'm pretty happy with the pair I got at the new place and hopefully I stay happy with them!

I got casting for our production on Monday and it turns out I have two parts, both en pointe.  I really was not happy.  Currently, I have two hours and fifteen minutes of pointe class each week.  When rehearsals start, that's going to change to four hours, minimum.  Pointe shoes generally die after twelve hours of use.  I'm sure you can do the math.

I'm probably going to be getting 2 new pairs of shoes soon and after prepping the pair I just got, I'm not looking forward to it!  What do I do to prep new shoes?

I have to put clear nail polish on my elastics and melt my ribbons after I cut them.

Then, I have to sew both of those on.  Pointe shoes cost $50+ and don't come with ribbon and elastics sewn own?  Correct!  You also have to purchase the ribbons and elastics separate from the shoes as they don't come with them.

Next, I form new lambs' wool pads.  Some people use toe pads, but I just like lambs' wool.  It forms to the shoes as well as your feet, though, so you have to make new ones for each new pair of shoes.

Just like heels, you gotta break them in before you start wearing them!  The shank (the hard sole) needs to be broken in some.  If not, you can't point your feet and most likely won't be able to get over the box.

If you're going to perform in a pair, chances are you're going to have to calamine them too.  This can take quite a bit of life out of the shoes as it wets them.

A lot of work for something you're only going to get twelve hours out of.  They do take around 3 hours to make, though.  Thankfully I'm not responsible for that too because that would just end badly.

Have a beautiful day!

My Dance Wishlist

I wear leotards and tights way more than normal clothes generally and here are some of the ones I want right now!

Unfortunately, I have to wear royal blue for ballet, and practically nothing comes in that color.  The best I have is black for jazz and lyrical.

Hair

Three-stranded vortex (instead of my usual two)

My hair has gotten a lot longer since this and now my bun is even larger than this normally.  Crazy!

Made two tiny braids starting from the base of my neck and wrapped them to make a head band.  Pinned in place.  They each only reached to my ears, but you couldn't tell!

A horrid picture, but I put my hair half up, twisted it into a bun, then french braided what was left starting at the bottom right, then kept going and wrapped it clockwise starting from the left!

This is from recently so it is pretty accurate on how my hair regularly looks now!

My hair post straightening it for dance.  I'm not sure why I bother because I spent an hour and a half and it doesn't even hold it.  UGH D:

Not hair, but I found it on my phone from 2 years ago- dance team all carved pumpkins together for our Halloween party!

Pointe

New here?
Follow on Bloglovin

This year is my 4th year doing ballet "again".  I did it for 3 when I was little, but then I only did jazz for a while.  I only started doing ballet again because it was a requirement to be on the competition team at my old studio.  Competing sounded like fun (this was pre-Dance Moms), so I figured I'd give it a go.

Turns out, it probably would've been better had I been doing ballet for a lot longer.  That's probably the only thing I'd go back and change in all honesty.  But, after 2 years of throwing myself in and doing everything I could at the studio, we found out that it really wasn't professional enough and if I wanted to continue to grow I'd have to move to a new studio.

I honestly hate change.  It sucks.  I'm no good at talking to people I don't know.  Surprisingly, moving studios wasn't as bad as I thought.  I was horribly scared though and really didn't talk to anyone the first few months, but then people gradually started talking to me more and more.  I really, really, like it there now.

Anyways, one of the reasons we chose that studio was because they had an in house company- Ballet Theatre of Illinois.  Last year, my first year at the studio, I decided I would audition for it, and I actually made it.  I was pretty amazed as I didn't expect that at all!  But, it kept getting better.  The first day of classes, my teacher told me that she wanted me to take pointe 1.

Pointe is ballet where you stand on the tips of your toes.  Classes are by invitation only and a pretty huge deal, in my opinion.  It takes a crazy amount of strength as well as technique and you can easily hurt yourself if you're lacking in either of those.

Taking pointe now meant that I had to dance en pointe in our performance for Ballet Theatre of Illionis.  I was freaking out to say the least.  On Halloween, we got to go up and walk across the room for the first time without an aid.  I was in love.  I thought pointe was the best thing in the world!

Then, we started rehearsals for BTI.  Pretty much everything changed.  We had to do things in our dance that we hadn't yet learned in class.  It was a huge push and was also pretty scary.  I started coming home with bad blisters and bruised toe nails.  I couldn't wait until rehearsal was over!

This year, I'm taking 3 ballet classes a week.  These classes include 1.5 hours of ballet, then 45 minutes of pointe.  The first few weeks I was dying I just couldn't keep up with all the other girls!  They were easily doing double pirouettes and I was still scared to do singles!

I went back and got another fitting on the 7th of September.  I left with brand new shoes and determination. I've been working really hard outside of class as well as inside and trying things that I'm scared to do.  I realized that the worse that could happen is me falling.  I've already done that plenty of times in other classes, so there's no need to worry about it here. After that, things have gotten a lot better.  I haven't had any bruises since and I'm no longer scared of my shoes!

I think just doing pointe in general was a huge milestone for me and I'm extremely proud of how far I've come.  Even if this isn't something I wind up doing, it really helped me learn that I won't be perfect at everything I try, as much as I'd like to say I am.  But, if I work hard enough at it, I can do it and actually be half good.

Review: Theatricals Tights

Most of my tights had rips in them so I decided I needed a few new pairs!  I decided to go with Theatricals Adult Convertible Dance Tights in Ballet Pink.

These fit very well and do have a lot of sizing options!  I love how well they breath, some tights make you so hot!  Plus, at All About Dance they are only $6.50, which is about half of what you pay at a store!

The only con I have found so far is that the hole at the bottom for converting the tights is a little small.  You have to stretch it out a little bit before wear.

Overall for $6.50, these tights are amazing!  Be sure to watch for sales on All About Dance too- you could get them for even cheaper!
